Keyboard navigation

Get there faster, no mouse needed

Skip links and keyboard shortcuts take keyboard and screen reader users straight to the main content, navigation and search.

Without a way to skip ahead, keyboard users have to tab through the whole menu on every page. EZZE WCAG Pro adds three skip links and five keyboard shortcuts to your theme, checks the targets on your home page and is included in every plan.

  • Three skip links that work without JavaScript
  • Five keyboard shortcuts with conflict protection
  • Target check against your home page

Two tools

Skip repeated areas with ease

The logo, menu and sidebar repeat on every page. Anyone using a keyboard or screen reader needs a quick way past them.

  • Skip links

Invisible jump links at the top of the page. They appear on the first press of Tab and lead to the main content, the navigation or the search.

  • Keyboard shortcuts

Key combinations that jump straight to an area from anywhere on the page, including the top or bottom of the page.

  • Strongest together

Skip links help when entering any page, keyboard shortcuts when switching quickly while reading. Both use the same targets.

Skip links

The first Tab goes straight to the content

Skip links sit right after the body tag and stay invisible until someone presses Tab. The settings page shows each target in its own card.

  • Three targets, each switchable on its own

Main content, navigation and search are active after installation. For each target you set the CSS selector, link text and an optional title attribute.

  • Target check against your home page

The setup status distinguishes a unique target, a missing target and selectors that match several elements.

  • Skip link design with preview

Colors, typography, spacing, corners, borders and shadows in one editor, built around a preview of the focused skip link.

  • Highlight and scroll offset

The target lights up briefly, with a fade or zoom effect. The scroll offset, 50 px by default, keeps it visible below a fixed header.

Keyboard shortcuts

Five shortcuts for the most important areas

With Alt + Shift on Windows and Linux, and Control + Option on a Mac. Each shortcut can be turned off individually or moved to another letter.

  • AltShiftN Navigation
  • AltShiftH Main content
  • AltShiftS Top of page
  • AltShiftE Bottom of page
  • AltShiftF Search
  • Check all targets

One click checks the active CSS selectors against your home page and flags targets that are not found or invalid.

  • Conflict protection

Active shortcuts must use different letters. You can change any letter, for example N to M.

  • In the toolbar's keyboard help

The keyboard help in the Accessibility Toolbar lists only the shortcuts you have actually enabled, with your own labels.

WCAG

Four criteria that keyboard navigation supports

Skip links and keyboard shortcuts close one of the most common gaps in WordPress themes. Missing labels or contrast issues are found by the Accessibility Test.

  • WCAG 2.4.1

    Bypass Blocks

Skip links and the main content shortcut bypass repeated areas such as the navigation.

  • WCAG 2.1.1

    Keyboard

All targets can be reached without a mouse.

  • WCAG 2.1.4

    Character Key Shortcuts

Every shortcut can be changed or turned off.

  • WCAG 2.4.7

    Focus Visible

The skip link is clearly highlighted when focused, and the target lights up briefly.

Questions about keyboard navigation?

Plans, visibility, JavaScript, Mac, fixed headers and the keyboard help.

1. Are skip links and keyboard shortcuts included in the Free plan?

Yes. Both are part of the website optimizations and are included in every plan, including the Free plan.

2. Why can't I see the skip links on my site?

That's how it should be. Skip links are hidden and only appear when they receive focus with the Tab key. Reload the page and press Tab once.

3. Do skip links and keyboard shortcuts need JavaScript?

Skip links don't: they are inserted right after the body tag and work with HTML and CSS. Keyboard shortcuts need JavaScript.

4. Which keys apply on a Mac?

On a Mac, use Control + Option instead of Alt + Shift, for example Control + Option + H for the main content.

5. My fixed header covers the target. What can I do?

Set the scroll offset to at least the height of your fixed header. The default is 50 px, for both skip links and keyboard shortcuts.

6. How do visitors know which shortcuts exist?

Enable the keyboard help in the settings of the Accessibility Toolbar. It shows the active shortcuts with the labels you set.

Skip links and keyboard shortcuts for WordPress

A skip link to the main content is one of the basics of an accessible website, yet many WordPress themes lack one. Keyboard navigation in EZZE WCAG Pro adds three skip links for main content, navigation and search, plus five keyboard shortcuts that jump to these areas from anywhere on the page. This supports WCAG success criteria 2.4.1 Bypass Blocks, 2.1.1 Keyboard, 2.1.4 Character Key Shortcuts and 2.4.7 Focus Visible.

Both tools check their CSS selectors against your home page so that no jump leads nowhere. With the skip link design you match colors, fonts and shadows to your theme, and a scroll offset keeps the target visible below fixed headers.

Part of the website optimizations, in every plan

Skip links and keyboard shortcuts are part of the website optimizations and are included in the Free plan. Together with focus outlines, they make sure visitors always see where they are and quickly get where they want to go.
